Chess
I became interested in chess right around the time the pandemic began. Even though in-person games were not possible, that did not stop me from playing. I went online and looked for opponents whenever I could. The more I played, the more I enjoyed the mix of quiet focus and intense thinking. You sit still, but your mind runs fast. Sometimes the best move is not the one you planned, and learning to adjust on the spot makes the game exciting.
As time went on, I joined tournaments at different levels and gained both experience and confidence. I am not the fastest player, and I do not always win. But chess has taught me to stay calm under pressure and to keep working through a problem without panicking. This year, winning first place in the Ontario High School Chess Championship was a milestone for me, and it reminded me how far I have come since those first online games.
Drums
I became interested in drums as a child after hearing a rhythm on TV that caught my attention. That moment stayed with me, and in 2017 I began learning drums seriously. Since then, it has become my primary instrument. I have practiced consistently and played in school ensembles including Jazz, Wind, and Concert Ensemble. Performing with these groups, especially on a trip to Chicago, gave me the chance to feel the energy of making music with others.
2017–Present: Primary instrument, continuous study and practice
2023–Present: Member of school Jazz, Wind, and Concert Ensembles; Performed in Chicago with the ensembles
2015–2023: Formal piano study, completed RCM Level 10 Examination
Piano
I studied piano formally from 2015 to 2023 and completed the RCM Level 10 Examination. Those years of lessons taught me discipline and persistence, and they also gave me a strong foundation in music. Even though I no longer take formal classes, I still turn to the piano when I want to relax or express myself.
